Goodrich Castle
Neighbouring the Forest of Dean, Goodrich Castle is a great vantage point to take in views of the Wye Valley. It is a perfect example of a medieval castle boasting one of the most complete sets of domestic buildings surviving in any English castle.
Goodrich Castle is steeped in historic significance, it was first mentioned in 1100 when the estate belonged to Godric, most likely a local Saxon who gave the site its name, Godric’s Castle. Nothing remains of the earliest castle and by 1120 it had passed to Baderon of Monmouth who likely began work on the keep. In 1204, under King John, the castle passed to the famous William Marshall, “the Greatest Knight”. The castle eventually fell during the Civil War, in 1646 Royalist forces surrendered under threat of Parliamentary mortar. Today, ‘Roaring Meg’ the only surviving civil war mortar is exhibited at the castle. More recently a modern stained glass window has been added to the medieval chapel, commemorating the lives of RAF crew and scientists who died in a plane crash near the castle in 1942 while developing Radar technology.
