B4234 Rockfall Update

On Saturday 19th February, BBLP were notified of a minor rockfall from a retaining wall on the B4234 near to the Kerne Lodge. Their teams attended to assess and a lane closure was put in place to protect the travelling public and keep them away from the wall.

On Monday 21st February, they were informed of another, more substantial rockfall at the same location. Their Senior Engineer attended site on Tuesday morning along with a Geotechnical Engineer from WSP, to assess the stability and condition of the wall following this latest incident and to make a decision as to whether the lane closure could be removed. It was recommended that the lane closure stays in place and that temporary concrete barriers are installed along the closed lane to contain any further material that may fall down. BBLP are currently arranging for the concrete barriers to be installed – when this is carried out, the road will be closed for a short time.

The planned resurfacing works for the B4234 from Walford to Kerne Bridge will still go ahead, commencing on Monday 28th February. A short section of road near the Kerne Lodge is going to be left out of the works due to the unstable nature of the retaining wall above the road.

The retaining wall is privately owned and dialogue with the landowner has already started regarding remedial works. Next week, the landowners insurance company are planning to send out a Structural Engineer and BBLP have been invited to meet with them on site to discuss.
